In a recent survey of mobile operators’ implementation plans regarding VoLTE, ViLTE, RCS conducted by Ovum and sponsored by iBasis, a majority of operators admitted that they don’t know whether they will implement S8HR or LBO models for VoLTE roaming. The survey highlighted the significant challenges that operators face and pinpointed the commercial implications of the different technical models.
Multiple commercial, technical and organizational challenges could delay deployment of VoLTE Roaming and other IMS-based services unless timely and informed decisions are made regarding new roaming structures.
The survey also revealed that operators don’t want to have to choose between time to market and regional call quality. They are demanding a competitive and flexible model to better compete with the OTTs.
Operators do not have to face these challenges alone, nor should they. IPX providers have the knowledge and expertise to explain the implications of the decisions being taken and help improve the speed and efficiency of deployments.
“Potential internal conflicts appear to be centered on different priorities for inbound and outbound roaming as well as between an operator’s strategy team developing service propositions and the roaming team implementing roaming structures,” said Ovum Senior Analyst Catherine Haslam. “It’s a major undertaking that requires a clear view of the business objectives and the technical implications, as well as cross-organizational cooperation to create a comprehensive implementation strategy.”
