Securing Global Messaging Traffic: iBASIS Continues to Combat Fraud with Support for the COIN Initiative

SMS phishing has surged in recent years. Fraudsters often spoof alphanumeric Sender IDs to impersonate trusted brands, tricking consumers into sharing sensitive data. Combating these threats is especially challenging when fraudulent traffic originates from abroad. The SMS Sender ID Registry is one central measure to support secure message traffic; here is how it works and how iBASIS supports it.

COIN’s SMS Sender ID Registry for Secure Messaging

To address this growing issue, the Collective Operator Information Network (COIN) launched the SMS Sender ID Registry in the Netherlands. This self-regulatory initiative, supported by Dutch mobile operators and messaging providers, aims to reduce fraud and smishing by validating Sender IDs and enabling pre-delivery filtering.

Enterprise participation is fundamental to the success of this fraud prevention effort. By registering their official Sender IDs and nominating lookalike IDs for proactive blocking, brands directly safeguard consumer trust and protect their own reputation from criminal impersonation.

As of November 4, 2025, COIN began actively blocking unregistered Sender IDs, following a successful pilot program from 2021 to 2025. The registry operates using:

  • Permit Lists: Verified and trusted Sender IDs
  • Deny Lists: Lookalike or Sender ID spoofing to significantly reduce fraud

Note: While it was initially focused on banking, COIN has now expanded eligibility to any legal entity, allowing industries such as retail, healthcare, and logistics to register their Sender IDs and protect their customers.
Organizations that use SMS to communicate with customers are strongly urged to register their Sender IDs with COIN.
